jonathon smith 100 beats per minute

A documentary attempting to visualize and address what has been lost when
sound has gone through the process of being recorded.

100 beats per minute from Jonathon David Kerr Smith on Vimeo.

I attempted to visualize and represent this through filming and recording
various instruments at very close range, focusing primarily on the
vibrations and resonance of each instrument when it is played. I also tried
to draw parallels and similarities with the instruments and natural elements.

Every instrument was filmed and recorded using a metronome set to 100 beats
per minute. This determined the pace of the sound composition, which
accompanied the film. The film itself was also edited and cut to a time
signature of 100 beats per minute.

The narrative of the film is directed by a series of interviews I conducted with
Norman Blake - Teenage Fanclub, Gordy Goudi - Echo and the Bunnymen and
Kenny Anderson - King Creosote.
